The problem of electrically conductive mattress materials was first brought to light in Physiologa’s research back in 1982. The effect of low and high frequency radiation was increased in most cases in mattresses made with metal spring systems, latex, horse hair, memory foam, and silver threads as well as other materials.

The Academy was looking for suitable materials to recommend to patients, so it carried out extensive testing in which more than 600 different mattress types were tested. To everyone’s amazement, there was no material in use that met the high standards ofthe Academy in terms of being anti-static, anti-allergenic, toxin-free, having low electrical conductivity, and high air permeability.

Spurred on by these findings, new techniques were developed to obtain the desired and appropriate core material. This was later enhanced by the participation of orthopaedic surgeons in development of the stretch-effect feature – a simple mechanical action with the aim of providing relief to those patients who struggle with joint and back pain. A simple mechanical action would convert the pressure on the nerve tissue into relief-bringing traction. For the removable, washable cover, we use Tencel.

Firmness

Our experience shows that people often have a distorted idea of what mattress firmness should feel like. We believe this has to do with their poor experience with mattresses so far. Firmness should be matched to body weight to allow, especially the shoulders to impress a little deeper into the mattress when we inevitably sleep on our sides. This takes the pressure off the chest, heart, breathing and circulation. Firmness levels available are:

• Hard – For people with a body weight above 100kg or 220 lb
• Medium – For people with a body weight between 50 and 100kg or 110 and 220 lb
• Soft – For people with a body weight under 50kg or 110lb

We encourage you to select the firmness that is indicated for your body weight. Only when there are two sleepers who would fall into different weight categories would we recommend picking the firmer option, so that the mattress is appropriately matched to support the heavier person. For mattress sizes larger than Queen, we provide two internal cores (like singles or twins) and, as standard, encase them in one big cover. Then both sleepers can have different firmness levels if needed. (Pick one on our site, but let your desire for different firmness levels be known in an email)

Mattress purchases for children – As children will continue to grow and get heavier, and we’d expect them to enjoy one of our mattresses for 7 to 10 years (to then replace it for hygiene reasons), it is often advised to get a medium firmness mattress for children.

Above Queen-Size, you get two internal cores

The special GEOVITAL foam has a maximum width. In the Theravital and Vitallind models, we can make queen-size mattresses from a single large block of our health foam. For larger mattresses, we have to make two internal cores, which is actually an added benefit.

This means you receive two mattress cores (which look like singles or twins, you could say) pushed together by the one big handmade cover we make for you. On the outside, it looks and feels like one big mattress, but the bonus is that sleepers can have different firmness levels on their side of the mattress and sleep on the side they prefer, even if it is different from what their partner wants. If one partner likes the stretch effect side up, but the other likes the pressure zone side up, then they can both have what they prefer.

People often ask, “Do you feel something in the middle of the mattress?” and after they receive their mattress, they always tell us they can’t feel it. It is a non-issue because the edges of the internal cores are not harder.

Are you in the USA? Our mattresses are toxin-free and would likely not pass the US fire testing because we don’t put chemical fire retardants in. You can still purchase us, exactly as healthy as they were intended, but one more step is required. We need on file a prescription from a doctor, chiropractor or Osteopath, stating you need a mattress without chemical fire retardants. This is normally not difficult to obtain.
